SAMBOREE 2010 - Austin, Manitoba
Austin is well known for the full size steam engine that sits high atop a strong steel frame at the entrance to the community. Travelers from all over the world have stopped to get a picture of this pioneer mammoth of the plains.
Austin is a town in western Manitoba on the Trans-Canada Highway about 110 km (85 miles) west of Winnipeg. It sits at the western edge of the table-flat Portage Plains, but to the south and west is surrounded by miles of low wooded hills known as the Carberry sandhills. The biggest attraction is the annual Rodeo and Threshermen's Reunion held at the Manitoba Agricultural Museum the last four business days of July. Austin received its name in 1881 from the Marquis of Lorne, then Governor General of Canada while he was on a western tour during construction of the Canadian Pacific Railway. Many German immigrants of Mennonite religion moved in to the Austin Manitoba area.
The Manitoba Agricultural Museum
The Manitoba Agricultural Museum is dedicated to collecting vintage farm machinery and buildings from 1900 and beyond. Located on 50 acres (200,000 m2) in Austin, Manitoba, to date they have amassed over 500 piece of machinery and a pioneer village consisting of more than 20 buildings complete with artifacts. This is Canada's largest collection of vintage equipment. The facilities include a camping and picnic grounds and a souvenir shop.Throughout the year the museum offers various tours, schools and hands on experiences climaxing with Annual Manitoba Threshermen's Reunion and Stampede and various other expositions.
